Drivers and subway passengers were inconvenienced by the resulting transit diversions. Police closed all six lanes of the famed boulevard, also known as Sixth Avenue, between 49th and 59th streets at 11 a.m. for the procession. Three lanes were shut at midnight so workers could lay the carpet.
